1st Cairn Valley Guides & Brownies
The Guides and Brownies first started on 13th May 1920. Their meeting place was in Bardennoch House, thereafter in the The Old School Ayr Street Moniaive, now the residence of Dorothy and Wilfred Pearson.
A Worldwide Movement: The Guides and Brownies are members of Girlguiding UK, the largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women in this country. It has about 600,000 members. There are similar organisations throughout the world and Girlguding UK is a founding member of the world association that unites them.
Guides
At present we have seven guides who are enthusiastic and have 'a sense of adventure' and work well under the supervision of Alex McMillan Guide Guider and Elaine Wilson Assistant Guider.
Who Can Be A Guide?
For all girls aged between 10 and 14 years (can continue beyond this if desired).
The programme for guides provides fun and challenging opportunities for Guides. It is based on the premise that girls, helped by a caring adult and given adequate resources, are capable of planning and carrying out their own activities.
What Do Guides Do?
The Programme incorporates the ideals of the Promise and the Law. It includes the basic Guide Traditions of:
- Action in the Community
- Individual development
- International Guiding
- Outdoor activity
The Programme has five broad zones to ensure that there are opportunities for young people to acquire knowledge and understanding, develop the personal and social skills needed to relate, effectively, with others to participate fully in community life and beyond.
The Five Zones
Healthy Lifestyles, Skills and relationships, Global Awareness, Celebrating Diversity and Discovery.
The Guide section programme aims to:
- Promote opportunities for Guides that are FUN, challenging and stimulating
- Involve Guides in activities that encourage development and citizenship
- Involve Guides in making decisions about their own lives, their local community and the wider world
- Encourage personal interests that will enhance and contribute to a Guide's future lifestyle
- Promote personal development – intellectual, spiritual, emotional, physical, social and moral
Monthly visits to Sanquhar Fun Pool, Indoor Holiday at Nether Auchendrane, 'Go For Its'. Interest Badges and parties all have been included in this years programme. Also the guides completed, 'The Scottish Outdoor Challenge' making a scrapbook with photographs, drawings and notes on their Woodland Nature Trail and gained a certificate and badge.
Guide Guider
Alex McMillan has just completed her Adult Leadership Qualification and has had to run the guide meetings successfully, demonstrating her ability to include the above. She has also had to attend regular training meetings and has completed her 1st Response in First Aid Certificate.

Brownies
Who Can Be A Brownie?
Any girl aged seven or over can be a Brownie. The oldest Brownies are usually about ten years old.
If you pay income tax, your daughter's Leader can use Gift Aid to claim 28p for every £1 you give in subs or donations. The money will be used for unit funds.
What Do Brownies Do?
Brownies have fun! They take part in indoor and outdoor activities that challenge them to do their best. Their meetings are action-packed and full of challenges, games and activities, usually ones that the brownies have suggested themselves. Everything a Brownie does is an adventure – it's a world of excitement, new interests and friends.
Programme
The Programme is based over three Zones – and is a 'Pick and Mix' approach to their adventure with a balanced and varied programme.

The Community: All about the Community, Discovering more about the Community and what you can do locally?
The World: All about the World, Discovering more about the World, What about your World?
Friends of Guiding
The Brownies have participated in County Events, An Indoor Holiday at Nether Auchendrane, A Giant Sleepover and 'The Scottish Outdoor Challenge' gaining a certificate and Badge for their scrapbook on their 'Woodland Nature Trail'. Swimming, parties, BBQs, sports all have featured in this year's programme of events. Also many Interest Badges have been gained.
Guider
Brownie Guider - Marysia Zoltowska is a fully qualified Guide Guider and has encouraged the girls to participate in all challenges set before them.

General
What Does It Cost? We charge 'subs' ever term an account is sent to cover costs like equipment and the hire of the meeting place. The Annual Subscription (census) this year £25 is included in this. For events like camps, indoor holidays and Adventure Days, an extra charge is usually made.
What Do They Wear? A large selection of Guide/Brownie uniforms are available through Dumfrieshire Girlguiding Depot – 'Y' Centre Castle Street Dumfries? Open every 2nd and 4th Saturday in the month during School term (goods can be bought online but if purchased through the local depot this benefits County Funds).
Child Protection Policies: It is the policy of Girlguiding UK to safeguard its members while participating in guiding activities. All reasonable steps are taken to ensure that, through relevant procedures and training, children, young people and adults taking part in guiding activities do so in a safe environment.
Support Your Daughter: Girlguiding UK encourages you to support your daughter's involvement in Guides or Brownies so she can get the most from the experience.
Friends of Guiding
Friends Of Guiding: We are indebted to the Friends of Guiding who have been supporting the units from 1920. These are ladies of the village, who were possibly guides and brownies themselves or just interested in the concept, who meet twice a year to hear the Guide and Brownie Annual Report and Statement of Accounts, offer help where needed and raise funds hosting an annual 'Autumn Fayre' which pays their Annual Census fees of £25 per uniformed member.
